Local Government Reorganisation- LGR
You may have heard about the local Government Reorganisation, we felt as though parent carers needed informed on what this means!
‘Local Government Reform’, ‘Local Government Reorganisation’, ‘Local Government Restructure’. They all mean the same thing, but there’s so many different names… Just to make LGR that little bit more complicated!
So what exactly is LGR?
The government decided in parliament that from 1 April 2023 local government in Cumbria will change. The decision is set out in a document
called the Structural Change Order (SCO) which states that the current six district councils and Cumbria County Council will be replaced by two
new unitary authorities; Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council. Which basically means, Cumbria County Council will be no more, It will be split into two, vertically down Cumbria and there will now be two new Local Authority’s instead.
Cumberland Council will be responsible for the areas of Allerdale, Carlisle and Copeland and Westmorland and Furness Council will be
responsible for the areas of Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland.
SENDAC felt that LGR is quite a complex subject and a lot to get your head around! We found a lot of the information out there wasn’t very easy to read or accessible to everyone and it was really important for Parent Carers to be able to access information and updates regarding this. In result, we asked Cumbria SEND partnership to create an easy read document about what LGR is, any updates they have currently and who to contact if you have any questions!
